2009 TCA Excellence in Achievement Award Winner

Hagen Ranch Road Branch Library is a new state-of-the-art branch library for Palm Beach County Library System in Delray Beach Florida. The building is a focal point for the local community as well as a central gathering and learning center. The building boasts open reading areas, community conference rooms, and an expansive electronic and paper library.

A complex blend of steel and concrete are utilized to create complex intersecting planes. The rear elevation of the building faces the main access road and features 118 feet of leaning tilt-up panels fixed at a 30 degree angle. Their support is illusive and broken up with glass window triangle features. The slanted panel façade continues over a low roof area requiring special steel structure for the roof to support the leaning spandrel panels. The main entrance is a further extension of the intersecting plane theme and includes a slanted steel support system for the entrance glass, a cast-in-place flat canopy, and a tilt-up concrete high canopy set at a 20 degree angle.

2009 TCA Achievement Award Winner

This mixed-use project integrates a three-story retail and office building with a six-story parking garage in the rear. Situated among a number of office and retail buildings on the site, the required parking garage façade was softened with the open air covered walkways and colonnade fronting the office and retail building. The garage has large faux windows with aluminum mullions which blends the look of an office space with the required open ventilation needed for the garage.

The six-story tilt-up panels were cast as a single panels, erected, and braced primarily to the outside of the building. The panels are load bearing for the precast double tees used inside the garage as well as for the precast hollow core floors of the office element. The main entrance to the garage goes through the center of the office space and was created using stacked spandrel panels.

Carillon Parking Garage - Miami Beach, Florida

2009 TCA Tilt-up Achievement Award Winner

Carillon is a high rise condominium building with a parking garage that is part of the enlarged base of the building. The Architect for the project wanted to have the base reflect the adjacent ocean and created free-form "waves" to conceal the garage floors. Detailed renderings and 1:1 templates of the top and bottom panel curves were devised, which were then used to set the form boards.

All the panels are spandrels that connect to the cast-in-place concrete columns and the post tension floor slab. Once the garage structure was complete, the embed plates were surveyed three dimensionally and field adjustments were made in the panels to ensure proper hidden connections. Panels were designed for both the wind loads as well as the vehicular impact load when the panel could act as the crash wall. Hidden connections provide a seamless appearance for the white panels, while steel louvers running between the panels add an eye-catching contrast while facilitating garage ventilation.

Miami Children's Museum - Watson Island, Florida

2005 TCA Tilt-up Excellence in Achievement Award Winner

The Miami Children’s Museum features several distinctive architectural details, the most prominent of which are the “wave panels” down the central corridor that create a dramatic 40-foot clear height. Because the panels featured randomly placed holes of different sizes, a life-size drawing of these random radii was plotted to assist layout.

The building also features perimeter panels with stepped angles, which were colored in varying shades for emphasis. The entry features large cantilevered panels hanging over a glass cone.

Because of the limited space available to cast the many panels needed, the contractor relied on casting beds and phased the erection of the panels. The building was tied together with a precast joint system and CIP, which involved a complex coordination of connections.

2006 TCA Tilt-up Achievement Award Winner

This project is comprised of four buildings that house an education and training facility for the campus where students can take classes in trades such as automotive body repair, automotive mechanics, diesel mechanics, carpentry and sheet metal. The owner desired an unfinished interior that could withstand the rigors of everyday use in a working lab environment. To meet the tight schedule and the architect’s design intent, cast-in-place elements were used with Tilt-Up panels and columns.

Exposed concrete elements that emphasize the support of the structure created visual interest. The panels consist of reveals around the windows that enhance the mullion scheme of the windows. A louver formliner also was used on each of the buildings to accent areas that would normally be blank because of the interior function. Panels are painted with a two cream colors and accented with green colored glass. Two shop buildings feature 12-inch-thick panels that provide architectural mass to these buildings. Thick panel columns were also added to the exterior of the buildings to create features and shadows. The other two buildings feature more than 70 spandrels set on both cast-in-place and Tilt-Up concrete columns. The cast-in-place columns required strict attention to finish and alignment to ensure it matched the Tilt-Up columns. A curved wall with inset glass supported by two Tilt-Up columns creates the focal point for the courtyard between the buildings.

Seminole Paradise Retail Center, Seminole Casino - Hollywood, Florida

2006 TCA Tilt-up Achievement Award Winner

This project consists of 10 buildings that all have tilt-up exterior walls with different themes for each building. With a Southwestern theme, cream colors with tile inlay and blue and red colored accents were used. Tile accents were used at the walkway and along the face of the panels.

All of the panels along the walkway have a wainscot of sandstone formliner. Along the arched colonnade, the panel legs were thickened to provide architectural mass as well as to enable a tile inset to be placed along the arch. These thickened legs were eliminated above the soffit to reduce panel and weight and facilitate lifting.

Main entries on a few of the buildings feature three panels that are placed directly in front of each other, thru-bolted for stability. These panels varied in height and shape to create a substantial architectural accent.

The center provides an entertainment venue that complements the hotel gaming experience that is also found on the site.
