5th Avenue Shops Renovation
Boca Raton, FL
The 5th Avenue Shops is a landmark shopping center for East Boca Raton. The project was initially constructed in the mid 1950's with additions in the 1960's that completed the center. The Architect's and Owner's vision was to renovate the center and create a new modern facade that increased the visibility to the main road. As original design drawings for the center were non-existent, an extensive field survey was required to identify the existing structural systems and framing orientations for the building and the exterior facade. It was determined that the center's existing structure would have to be left independent of the new facade features.
All the new tower and facade work was completed using independent steel braced frames that would abut and cantilever over the existing facade. Large eccentric foundations support the braced frames and, at times, existing walkway columns that could not be removed. All steel frames were bolted together allowing the steel erector the simplest methods of field construction. Metal stud framing is attached to the braced frames to create the new façade finish as well as the new soffit framing. Construction was phased to allow minimal impact to the center. All tenants remained in operation throughout the construction phase.
